Scientists have identified two magma reservoirs beneath Nicaragua’s Masaya Volcano after studying six years of satellite data. One underground reservoir appears to have begun refilling while a shallower reservoir near the active crater continued to lose magma.

What did scientists discover beneath Masaya Volcano?

Researchers from Pennsylvania State University found evidence that Masaya’s underground magma system is more complex than previously understood. The study identified two magma sources behaving differently beneath the active volcano.

The findings were based on Sentinel-1 satellite observations collected between 2018 and 2024. Researchers used radar measurements to track small changes in the ground around the volcano.

Is Masaya Volcano about to erupt?

The study did not identify an immediate danger to nearby communities or confirm that an eruption is about to happen. The researchers said the findings will help improve monitoring and future eruption forecasting.

Masaya remains an active volcano, so scientists will continue watching changes in its underground reservoirs, surface movement and gas emissions.

How is the magma moving?

The ground above one deep reservoir sank between 2018 and mid-2022 before rising again through 2024. Scientists said the shift may indicate that magma first drained from the reservoir and later began entering it again.

At the same time, the ground around Masaya’s Santiago crater and lava lake continued to sink. That pattern suggests a separate, shallower reservoir may be losing magma.

Where is Masaya Volcano?

Masaya Volcano is in Nicaragua, about 20 kilometres from the capital, Managua. Its caldera is a national park and attracts visitors because of its active lava lake.

Around 2 million people live within approximately 13 miles of the volcano, making continued monitoring important for public safety.

What does the discovery mean for residents?

The discovery does not mean residents are facing an immediate eruption threat. It gives scientists more information about how magma moves beneath Masaya and may help them identify unusual activity sooner.

The volcano also releases sulfur dioxide, a potentially harmful volcanic gas. Monitoring gas levels and ground movement remains important even when no eruption is occurring.

How did satellites detect the underground changes?

Scientists used interferometric synthetic aperture radar, or InSAR, to compare satellite measurements taken at different times. The method can detect very small changes in the elevation of the ground.

Because radar can collect data through cloud cover, it is especially useful for studying volcanoes in tropical regions such as Nicaragua.

What happens next?

Researchers said longer-term satellite observations and computer modelling could improve understanding of Masaya’s magma system. Continued monitoring may help scientists distinguish normal activity from changes that could increase volcanic hazards.

The current study examines activity through 2024, so newer observations will be needed to determine whether the underground patterns have continued.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is happening beneath Masaya Volcano?

Scientists found evidence of two magma reservoirs showing different patterns of underground activity.

Is Masaya Volcano going to erupt?

No immediate eruption danger was identified in the study.

How many people live near Masaya Volcano?

Approximately 2 million people live within about 13 miles of the volcano.

What did the satellite data show?

The data showed one area sinking before rising again, while the ground near Santiago crater continued to sink.

Why is Masaya Volcano being monitored?

Masaya is active, has a lava lake and releases sulfur dioxide, so scientists track its ground movement, magma behaviour and gas emissions.
